The most common issue

When your games console shows nothing on screen

A console that powers on but gives the TV no signal is frustrating, and it is something we see regularly. The HDMI port on the back takes a lot of strain from cables being pulled or knocked.

Check the easy things first

Try a different HDMI cable and a different input on your TV. If the picture comes back, the console may be fine.

Look at the port

With the console off, look into the HDMI port. Bent, pushed-in or uneven pins, or a port that feels loose, are signs it needs attention.

Let us diagnose it

No-display faults are not always the port. We inspect the console to find the actual cause and explain it before any repair.

Avoid forcing it

Repeatedly pushing a cable into a damaged port can make things worse. Unplug it and bring the console in.

Faults we diagnose

What is wrong with it?

HDMI port and no-display faults

The console powers on, the light comes on, but the TV says no signal. Often the HDMI port has been knocked, bent or loosened by a cable being pulled at an angle. We inspect the port and the surrounding board before recommending anything.

Power faults

Nothing at all when you press the button, a click and then silence, or a console that turns itself off. We test to find where the fault actually is rather than guessing.

Overheating

Loud fans, warnings on screen or shutdowns mid-game. Dust build-up and cooling problems are common causes, and we will explain what we find.

Disc-drive faults

For Xbox Series X and disc-edition PS5: discs not reading, not loading, or not ejecting. Not applicable to the Series S or PS5 Digital Edition.

USB and charging-port faults

A Switch that will not charge, or a loose USB port on any console. Worn or damaged ports are a frequent cause of charging and connection problems.

Diagnostics

Not sure what is wrong? Bring it in and describe what happens. We will assess the console and talk you through what we find before any repair goes ahead.

Questions

Console repair FAQs

Can you repair an Xbox Series X HDMI port in Scunthorpe?

Yes. Xbox Series X HDMI port faults are one of the console repairs we see at our shop at 3 Albion Park, Midland Road, Scunthorpe. Book online or drop the console in, and we will inspect the port and confirm what is needed before any work goes ahead.

My console turns on but there is no picture. Is it the HDMI port?

It can be, but not always. A no-signal fault can also come from the cable, the TV input or the console itself. Try another HDMI cable and TV input first. If it still shows nothing, bring it in and we will diagnose the cause.

Which consoles do you repair?

We cover Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Sony PlayStation 5 (disc and Digital Edition), Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

How much does a console repair cost?

It depends on the console and the fault. We diagnose it first and tell you what is involved before any repair goes ahead, so there are no surprises. Call 01724 841151 if you would like to talk it through.

Is there a warranty on console repairs?

Yes. All repairs carried out at Scunthorpe Computers include a 90-day parts and labour warranty. If the same fault returns within that period, we will fix it at no extra cost.

Do I need to bring controllers, cables or the dock?

Just the console is usually fine. If the fault involves charging or docking, such as on a Nintendo Switch, it helps to bring the charger and dock you normally use so we can check everything together.

Can I just turn up, or do I need to book?

You are welcome to drop in during opening hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 4:30pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm. Booking online first means we already have your details when you arrive.
